Mediterranean Diet

Mediterranean Diet is a diet which follows the eating habits of the people who live in countries surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea. It is a healthy diet made up mostly of fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, seeds, whole grains, pasta, cereals and olive oil that are low in saturated fats.  They then add a smaller amount of seafood, red meat, poultry and dairy products.  A moderate amount of red wine is also included. 



They prefer a dessert of fruit but will consume sweet thing once or twice a week.  This diet has had many studies done on it this is because of the people in this region experience a very healthy life.  It is noted that cases of chronic heart disease, gallstones, diabetes and cancers are at a minimum in this region.

Mediterranean Diet is a balanced nutritious diet low in saturated fats, salt, and sugar but high in essential vitamins.  The people in the region live an active life and find time to socialize and relax with each meal. This is an important factor as this helps with the process of digestion. Diet and Exercise is an important part of any life.

The most important part of the Mediterranean Diet is olive oil.  Olive oil is a mono saturated fat which is considered a good fat.  The oil does not increase cholesterol levels in the blood. There are a lot of advantages of cooking with Olive oil instead of vegetable oil.  It has cholesterol fighting properties and is high in anti – oxidants.
