Diet Food can be defined as fresh healthy natural food taken from a variety of food groups, it also important to look at portion size of these foods.  It is important to get the right variety of food so that we make sure we get all the nutrition we need. Diet Food can be defined as fresh healthy natural food taken from a variety of food groups, it also important to look at portion size of these foods.  It is important to get the right variety of food so that we make sure we get all the nutrition we need. Diet Food is a very important aspect of a healthy life.  The best way to learn about diet food is to use the tool called a food pyramid.  This tool was developed by the U.S Department of Agriculture. (USDA).  The food pyramid gives you a well rounded controlled diet with includes all your nutrients.

At the larger base of the pyramid is the food group of grains, breads, cereal and pasta.  These foods provide an important source of energy through complex carbohydrates. You will need to eat 6 – 11 servings of this group each day. The next food group up the pyramid is the Fruits and Vegetables which are high in nutrients including Vitamin A, C, Potassium and Folate.  It is important to include a variety of Fruit and Vegetables. You will need 3 -5 serving of this group each day. The next food group up the pyramid is the Meat, Poultry, and fish group.  This group provides protein, iron and zinc. You should have 2-3 serving of this food a day.  The next food group up the pyramid is the dairy products Milk, Cheese, Yogurt group.  This group provides protein, vitamins and minerals, particularly calcium. You should have 2 servings a day. At the top of the pyramid is the Sweets and Fats group. This group should be the smallest proportion of the day. This group has high calories but not much nutrition.
These guidelines will allow you to prepare healthy meals of Diet Food for your family.

It is recommended the following amounts of calories should be consumed in a day.

1600 - for non active women and older adults
2200 - for children, active women, and non active men.
Pregnant women may need an extra 500 calories a day.
2800 – for teenage boys, active men and very active women.

It is great to make Diet and Nutrition a part of your everyday life. Healthy eating does not have to be boring, by combining the foods from the above groups and adding herbs spices and low fat sauces, foods can be interesting and tasty.  If you have a young family it is good to introduce them to a healthy diet at a young age to give them a good start to life giving them the nutrients and energy they need to grow and learn.
